How ReadNext Works

Independence isn't something we wait for at the end. We build it from the beginning.

ReadNext is built around a simple idea: each new skill should move through more than one context.

A learner first understands it, then practises recognising it when the example changes, finds it in the Qur'an and learns how to use it as part of real reading.

One skill. More than one context. Gradually, more independent reading.

The Method

What happens after something new is taught?

A new skill doesn't stay in one exercise. The context gradually changes, so the learner moves from understanding something to recognising it, finding it and beginning to use it in real reading.

01

Learn it

A new letter, sound or reading pattern is introduced clearly and in a manageable step. The learner understands what they are looking at, how it sounds and how it should be read.

Start with one manageable skill

02

Recognise it

Then the context changes. The same learning appears in different examples, words and forms. This helps the learner recognise the skill rather than memorise one familiar exercise.

03

Find it in the Qur'an

The learner begins finding what they have learnt in the Qur'an. They aren't expected to read everything around it yet. The task is to recognise and use what they do know.

Find what you already know

04

Use it to read

As more skills are added, the learner begins bringing them together. Reading strategies help them focus on manageable pieces, work through unfamiliar words and join those pieces into complete reading.

Find the pieces. Read them. Join them.

The examples become more complex. The learner's role grows with them.
The Learning Experience

The lesson doesn't have to end when the live session does.

Live teaching gives learners a place to learn something new, practise it with guidance and receive correction.

But building familiarity takes more than meeting a skill once. ReadNext is designed so that learners can return to the learning, practise between lessons and continue applying what they know.

01

Live Teaching

New learning is introduced, modelled and practised together. The teacher can listen, correct and identify where more support is needed.

02

Learning Videos

Short, focused explanations allow important learning to be revisited when something has been forgotten or needs another look.

03

Practice Videos

Guided practice gives learners another opportunity to attempt, listen, repeat and strengthen their reading between live lessons.

04

Qur'anic Application

What is being learnt is repeatedly applied in Qur'an reading, so applying knowledge develops alongside learning it.

One lesson becomes part of a wider learning cycle.
Live lesson → Learn → Practise → Apply → Repeat

One live lesson. Learning that continues between lessons.

The different parts of ReadNext are designed to work together. Teaching introduces the skill. Revisiting helps it become familiar. Practice gives the learner more opportunities to use it, and Qur'anic application keeps connecting that learning to the reading it is ultimately for.

Building Independence

At first, we ask the questions with them. Eventually, they begin asking them for themselves.

When a learner reaches unfamiliar reading, the aim isn't simply for someone to immediately give them the answer.

They are gradually taught how to approach what they see: notice what they already recognise, focus on manageable reading pieces, use the knowledge they have and work forward from there.

At the beginning, that process may need a lot of guidance. As the learner becomes more familiar with it, the guidance can begin to change.

01

Teacher guides

The learner is shown what to notice and how to approach the reading.

→
02

Learner tries

They begin attempting the same process with support close by.

→
03

Teacher prompts

Instead of giving the answer, a smaller reminder may be enough.

→
04

Learner works it out

The questions and strategies begin becoming part of how they read.

What guidance can sound like

The answer doesn't always have to come first. Sometimes a question is more useful.

01 “Can you find the part you already know?”
02 “What can you read here?”
03 “Can we break this into smaller reading pieces?”

Support doesn't disappear in one jump. It changes as the learner becomes more able to recognise, attempt and work through reading.

The goal isn't to remove support suddenly. It's to gradually make more of the reading belong to the learner.

The ReadNext Approach

We don't expect independence at the end. We practise it from the beginning.
